RESERVATIONS

We strongly encourage you to sign up for class in advance as spaces are limited. We will certainly accept walk-ins on a first-come first-serve basis subject to class availability.

In order to reserve classes online, you just need to sign up for an account with our booking system (it’s super easy) and you must have a single class, a current class package or an unlimited package on your account, all of which can be purchased online.

CANCELLATIONS

Alas, sometimes life gets in the way and you’ll need to cancel a booking. If you cancel at least 2 hours before the start of class it will be an early cancel. No problem! Your class credit will be returned to your account which you can use for future bookings, woohoo!

If you have to cancel less than two hours before the start of class it will be a late cancel. That means that if you are using a class pack, the class will be deducted from your class package. If you are on one of our unlimited plans, 1 day will be subtracted from your package. We don’t like doing it but it’s just to be fair to the eager people on the waitlist who want to take your spot!

It’s easy to cancel online through the booking system or by calling the studio but please understand that we cannot accept email cancellations.

FIRST TIME STUDENTS

Welcome, lovely to meet you! We love welcoming new people to our community so much and we want to get to know you. So if you’re a first time student you’ll need to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of class. We’ll ask you to fill out a quick health information form and your instructor can meet you and answer any quick questions you may have. This is really important stuff for us and for you so please understand that if you are a first time student you will not be able to join class after it has started.

LATE COMERS

Don’t be late! Why not show up early, get your stuff put away in our locker room, grab some water, peruse our merchandise, take a DEEP breath, or chat with us or your fellow classmates? We’re nice!

Seriously though, there are two reasons why we ask you not to be late to class and they are both because we care about you and your experience. First, it’s not safe and decreases the effectiveness of your efforts! It may not seem like it but even after 5 minutes you have already missed a big portion of important warm up and arm-sculpting exercises. Second, it is a major distraction and disruption for your instructor and your fellow classmates already in the burn to have late comers faffing about collecting weights and weaving through the crowd to find a spot.

We love our clients, we love our class and we want everyone to have the best experience possible but here’s the uncomfortable bit. If you’re more than 5 minutes late to class you won’t be able to join and we’ll have to count it as a late cancel. Don’t be cross with us because we don’t like doing it but it’s for everyone’s benefit and safety. Whoa, that was awkies, glad it’s over.

WAITLISTS

Drat, the class you wanted is already full. Is it worth adding yourself to the wait list? Absolutely! Spaces open up VERY frequently as people's plans change. Note that if someone cancels and you are next on the waitlist you’ll automatically be added to the class.

You will receive an email notification up to 2 hours prior to the class. (You need to opt in for our emails!) So keep an eye on your emails, and if your plans change we won’t take it personally but please remember to take yourself off of the wait list. If you do so less than 2 hours prior to the class, we'll have to count it as a late cancel, i.e. the class will be deducted from your package, or if you are on one of our unlimited plans, 1 day will be deducted from your plan.

OVERFLOW CLASSES

If our waitlist is bursting at the seams, we may decide to run an “overflow” class at the same time. We’ll always give plenty of notice and when we add the class, you’ll get an email notification straightaway. Once you are notified the normal cancellation policy applies so do keep in mind the whole plans have changed thing.

DRESS CODE

Ah, what to wear, what to wear. If you say to yourself, “what would I wear to yoga class?”, then you’ll get pretty close! Please wear a top that covers your midsection completely. You will spend some time on your knees stretching. So please wear leggings or workout gear that covers your knees. You won’t be wearing trainers, but you must wear socks. We have some great BARREtoned socks that we sell in our studio that have grip on the bottom for a little extra traction and stability.

PREGNANT CLIENTS

Congrats! BARREtoned is a great way to safely stay in shape while you await the arrival of your bundle of joy. If you are preggers, you must take a minimum of 2 prenatal classes to learn our pregnancy modifications. Once you are comfortable with the modifications, it's ok for you to participate in the mixed classes. If you're too knackered, you can also take half classes - please inquire about our pregnancy class packs. We require you to bring a note from your doctor stating that you are fit to exercise or your antenatal notes indicating that your pregnancy is low risk.

FAQ

General
What is BARREtoned?

BARREtoned is a full-body workout performed at the ballet barre and on mats creating beautifully long, lean and toned muscles. Intense interval training will get your heart pumping, your muscles shaking and calories burning! Active stretching to increase flexibility and elongate muscles follows every exercise.

What are the results and how quickly will I see them?

You will start seeing your body transform in as little as 8 sessions. Typical results include sculpted arms, defined thighs, a lifted seat, chiseled abs, improved posture and reduced body fat. Over time, you will develop a much more graceful physique.

How is it different from Pilates and Yoga?

While BARREtoned derives some of its inspiration from Pilates and Yoga, it is a more holistic concept with the ballet barre as the main focus. Most positions use your own body weight to isolate and strengthen your muscles with the support of the barre. We also use small weights and a high number of reps to build lean muscle mass without the “bulk”. While Pilates exercises are largely performed in a sitting or prone position and are focused on the core, BARREtoned takes place both at the barre and on mats and works all major muscle groups.

Why the ballet barre?

The ballet barre serves as support in positions where the body’s own weight is used as resistance. Students rest their hand on the barre, hold onto it, press up underneath it or pull down from it. In these various positions, the ballet barre helps to work your postural muscles, arms, abs, seat, thighs and calves.

How often should I take class?

We recommend a minimum of 3 classes per week to get visible results. If you manage to attend class 4-5 times a week, even better! You will see the changes in your body much faster.

Do I need any experience to take the class?

No experience is necessary. Students of all ages and fitness levels can join our class. Do not worry if you have not exercised for a while! While the class will be challenging, there are different options available to meet your ability level. Your instructor will help you get through the class safely and in good form.

Should I do cardio in addition to BARREtoned?

There is no need to complement BARREtoned with cardio or running, as the class includes cardiovascular elements already. In fact, we recommend that clients focus solely on BARREtoned, as they will get better results and improve their stamina. If you are currently taking BARREtoned twice a week and running twice a week, we dare you to take our class 4 times a week and skip the running just for a month. You will see the effects for yourself!

What are your online classes?

BARREtoned Online Workouts give you the content from our studio no matter where you are and what time you are available. In the studio, you receive one on one corrections from an instructor to perfect your form and maximize your workout, as well as the motivation of working in a group setting. We’d love to see you in the studio as well! You can sign up for our studio classes HERE

How are your online workouts different from classes in studio?

BARREtoned Online Classes are our regular studio workouts, which have been designed to be done at home, in a hotel room, or on the go. Each 1-hour workout is designed to shape, lift, and tone your entire body. Workouts are low impact and focus on isometric contractions and controlled actions for a long, lean body, increased strength and improved posture with long-term results.

Can I take BARREtoned on consecutive days?

It is absolutely fine to take BARREtoned on consecutive days and we even encourage it. Since we use lighter weights and a high number of reps, it is not necessary for your muscles to have a day of rest like in other workouts that involve heavy weight lifting. You might feel a little sore 1-2 days after class, but working your sore muscles can actually make them feel better.

Will BARREtoned help me lose weight?

With each BARREtoned class, you burn fat and systematically replace it with lean muscle mass. The more muscle tissue you build up, the more calories you burn as a consequence, even in a resting position. Even in your sleep! Don’t focus so much on what your scale says. Your lean physique and your loose fitting clothes should be indication enough.

How is BARREtoned different from other barre classes?

Our main goal in class is to get you into the correct form, so that you feel the exercises in the right muscles and get optimal results. Therefore, our instructors call all clients by their first name and correct them verbally and manually. Many of our students say that BARREtoned is a bit like personal training in a group. Our instructors challenge each student individually, while you work out in a fun environment with like-minded people.

Is it normal that my thighs start shaking in class?

Shaking is good and there is no reason to worry. It just means that you are exhausting your muscles. Many of our new students shake, and even if you have been taking BARREtoned for a while, you can still challenge yourself by going lower and getting a good “shake”. When we tell you “Good Shaking” in class, it’s a compliment!

Why do my thighs hurt so much during thigh work at the barre?

The discomfort you are experiencing is muscle burn. It is a good kind of “pain”, as it simply means that you are working your quads and reshaping your thighs. Your thighs are your largest muscle group, so working them results in a huge calorie burn. Now that’s another benefit that should make you want to stay in it!

Why do we stretch?

We stretch each muscle right after working it in order to create a lean, long physique and improve your flexibility as well as your overall wellbeing. Take the stretches seriously. They play an important part in changing your body.

What should I wear?

Please wear leggings/workout pants that cover your knees, a top that covers your midsection completely and athletic socks. We recommend BARREtoned grippy socks which are sold in our studio. Trainers are not needed.

What should I bring to class?

Bring a bottle of water (other drinks are not allowed) and good spirit! Also, don’t forget your socks, as you will not be able to take class barefoot. Towels are provided in the studio.

Will I be sore after class?

Depending on how fit you are, you may experience some soreness after taking our class. Don’t worry! This is your body’s natural response to getting into better shape. If you stick with our class, this soreness will decrease over time. We describe it as a satisfying, productive feeling – a reminder that your hard work is changing your body for the better.

Will I sweat?

Even though BARREtoned gets your heart rate up and you will find yourself breathing heavily, you will not sweat as much as you would during cardio, spinning or running. Most clients sweat just a little or not at all, so it is not always necessary to take a shower afterwards.

Can I take BARREtoned if I am pregnant?

We recommend any pregnant students to take BARREtoned, as it can increase your general wellbeing and mitigate many pregnancy related conditions. Apart from that, you will lose weight and tone up faster after your pregnancy. (Check out our BARREtoned Stories to find out about Esther’s pregnancy experience with BARREtoned.)

However, you must take a minimum of 2 prenatal classes to learn our pregnancy modifications. Once you are comfortable with the modifications, you can participate in the regular classes. You can also take half classes – please inquire about our pregnancy class packs.

All pregnant students are required to bring a doctor’s note stating that they are fit to exercise or their antenatal notes indicating that their pregnancy is low risk.

Can I take BARREtoned if I have injuries?

We recommend that you consult your doctor and we require you to discuss any conditions with your instructor prior to class. We do offer modifications, which were developed with physical therapists, to cater to common conditions, such as knee issues or tennis elbow. Your instructor will show you your modifications and guide you through the class safely.

One of the main benefits of BARREtoned is how gentle it is on your joints (as opposed to running for example). Many of our clients with injuries say that BARREtoned is the only type of exercise they have been able to safely participate in. BARREtoned also helps alleviate many common conditions, such as lower back pain.

Is BARREtoned just for women?

Not at all! We have a number of male students who have become literally addicted to BARREtoned! Even though men are often wary when hearing the word “ballet barre”, any man who has tried BARREtoned knows that this is not a sissy workout, but a challenging exercise regime that will exhaust every single muscle in your body and requires 100% focus and determination.

Do I need to book classes in advance?

We highly recommend that you make a reservation prior to class, even though we accept walk-ins on a first-come first-serve basis subject to class availability. It's easiest to book online or you can give us a call at 0207 229 8668. Please view our Pricing & Policies section for more details about the different package options and studio policies.

How does the wait list work?

Drat, the class you wanted is already full. Is it worth adding yourself to the wait list? Absolutely! Spaces open up VERY frequently as people's plans change. Note that if someone cancels and you are next on the waitlist you’ll automatically be added to the class.

You will receive an email notification up to 2 hours prior to the class. (You need to opt in for our emails!) So keep an eye on your emails, and if your plans change we won’t take it personally, but please remember to take yourself off of the wait list. If you do so less than 2 hours prior to the class, we'll have to count it as a late cancel, i.e. the class will be deducted from your package, or if you are on one of our unlimited plans, 1 day will be deducted from your plan.

How do I become a BARREtoned instructor?

If you are interested in becoming a BARREtoned teacher, the first step is to attend our class on a regular basis for several months until you become a Master Student. This period may vary depending on your experience and abilities. If we decide that you have the skills and personality to become a teacher, you will be invited to our auditions. Upon successful audition you will complete a training course over 2-3 months, until you start teaching your own classes.

All BARREtoned teachers hold ETM (Exercise to music) qualifications and are REPS certified in addition to the BARREtoned training and ongoing evaluations. BARREtoned classes are exclusively taught in our studios or venues we approve.

Video Help
How does monthly billing work?

Once you sign up for BARREtone Online Workouts, you will be charged automatically each month unless you cancel. You can cancel anytime.

Why is my video not playing smoothly on my computer?

First, check to make sure that you have a strong, broadband internet connection. Next, try downloading and installing an updated browser (updated versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari work well!) and an updated version of Adobe Flash Player. If you need further tech support, email Online Help. We will help you!

Why is my video not playing on my iPad/iPhone?

On mobile devices, you could be experiencing streaming issues if you are watching videos over the mobile connection (3G or 4G rather than an internet connection). BARREtoned workouts require a broadband connection for optimized viewing and we recommend connecting to wifi.

Is it possible to view online workout videos on my TV?

Yes! View online workouts by connecting your computer or iOS device to your TV. BARREtoned Online Workouts are compatible with Apple AirPlay.
